Jointly authored pieces are eligible only if all authors are students and consent to submit.

Previously published pieces, or pieces that are already slated for publication, are ineligible. The winner receives a $2000 cash prize, public recognition, an offer of publication in ELI’s flagship journal, the Environmental Law Reporter (ELR), and a one-year individual membership to ELI.

The student must also have a firm commitment to diversity and equality and be dedicated to protecting the rights of everyone regardless of race, sex, religion or sexual orientation. Finalists may be asked for a letter of recommendation from a current or former teacher or professor. D.) law students enrolled at any time between August 15, 2018 and August 15, 2019, who have not at any time engaged in the practice of law. They will receive a plaque and an employee benefits treatise published by Bloomberg BNA Books.

All applications must be completed and submitted by June of 2019 in order to be eligible for consideration. Winning essays may be posted on our website, with the student’s approval. The Cunningham & Mears Academic Scholarship The Cunningham & Mears Academic Scholarship is an annual award of $2500, presented by the firm, to a student who wishes to pursue the study of History or Law. The winning papers will also be distributed to the Fellows of the American College of Employee Benefits Counsel, experienced attorneys who have made significant contributions to the advancement of the employee benefits field in a wide range of practice settings including law and consulting firms, universities, labor unions, advocacy organizations and government agencies throughout the United States.

Criteria for judging entries will be organization, practicality, originality, quality of research, clarity of writing and advocacy.
